To be honest I've actually never been in a greatly altered state of consciousness while listening to GD, but I imagine this performance would probably make for a life-changing experience:

I had a particularly good experience with the 6/24/70 Port Chester Dark Star suite during a Chimora ceremony a few years ago. The thematic jamming sounded just lovely in my altered state, while the Attics segment provided a nice period of reflection and introspection...

You'll need lots of different music to listen to during your journey, I suggest you have plenty of options standing by as your mood is likely to change frequently during your trip.

I have always enjoyed the music from Country Joe's Electric Music For Mind And Body during my excursions into altered consciousness. The music on this album is so psychedelic you almost don't need an elixir to trip...

D., you beat me to it. 6-24 is the best AUD hands down (it's not even close) and one of the best moments in GD history.

Set that sucker to NFA and burn a smoking crater in your mind. Attics is awe inspiring along with, as D. mentioned, the whole D/S suite.

A must.

An underrated moment from that set is the transition into China Cat Sunflower - it's at the tail end but wow, so exciting!

Hey mc! How are you doing? I miss seeing your handle.

I agree with you, but during the C/R I think they lose a little steam, or at least it's not as mind blowing as what preceded it.

I'm great! I'm just emerging from a total hiatus from the dead that lasted about 8 months, but I've just started listening to shows again. Most of what I've been listening to since about June has been jazz.

Yeah, the C-R itself isn't the best, but I really like the intensity of the transition about of StStephen.

Don't think i have seen a Throbbing Gristle reference in 30 years! Had a roommate in my first year in college who was a huge fan. As a somewhat naive 17 year old, they initially scared the crap out of me. Although I thought Something Came Over Me was kind of funny.

This also has a very energetic "Man Smart."

Just a question, why have you people been telling me not to listen to 80's GD. LOL! This is a wild show.
Yes, Jerry's voice is bad; but what a powerhouse he is anyway!

Most of the shows from that decade are not good for your blood pressure. My doctor told me so.

most people just find the 80s to be post "epic psychedelia" and hence rate it as sub par, theres some merit to that judgement. But listening to some 80 and 89 made me remember how much I love that music. I do think dropping some acid and listening to a 72 show is gonna be better than an 80s show though, for obvious reasons.

deniro, there are more great 80s show than any of us could count. I just gotta hold it down for my late dead lovers, we're second class citizens ya know...

“most people just find the 80s to be post "epic psychedelia" and hence rate it as sub par”

I've never heard anyone cite that as one of the reasons. To me, the musicianship is just sub par compared to '66 – '74. One of the main factor's for me as well is Jerry's declining vocal abilities. His voice early on was such a joy to hear, and listening to his voice in most '80s shows just makes me sad. But yes, I admit there are still many incredible '80s show that I really enjoy. They just are much harder to come by compared to the early years.

I suggest watching the Grateful Dead movie, and fully immersing yourself in the experience via headphones or a good sound system. It's quite an experience, particularly the opening animated sequence which is a bit confusing and erratic to the sober mind. Watch it after being sufficiently dosed, and it will blow your mind and somehow make perfect sense. I can't recommend this enough. And then the marvelous show itself, with the visual accompaniment and everything, will make you feel like you're at the show. It did for me at least. One of the most enjoyable trips I've had.

I would also throw on a '69 Dark Star at some point. Happy sailing!

But at some point you're going to coming out the other side. Listen to the 2nd set of this show and it will mellow you out nicely.

Mermen are freakin' awesome, this one has been getting a lot of play time.....it might just be me, but I hear overtones (undertones???) of Spanish Jam in track 1.

If not, it's the result of an encounter between Ennio Morricone, a Sonoran Desert toad and 5-MeO-DMT.

http://www.archive.org/details/mermen2002-01-05.shnf

This was too good to not add....

Cultivation and uses:

To obtain the psychoactive substances the toxin of psychoactive toads is commonly milked from the toad's poison glands. The milking procedure does not harm the toad — it consists of stroking the animal under its chin to initiate the defensive poison response. Once the liquid toxin has been collected and dried, it can be used for its psychedelic effects. The toad takes about a month to refill its poison glands following the milking procedure, during which time the toad will not produce poison. Some vendors sell dried toad skins, even though it is possible to harvest the poison without harming the toad. The poison is often used for recreational purposes.

Rumors dating from the 1970s claimed that groups of "hippies" or teenagers were licking the psychoactive toads to get high. One version of the story has hippies in the hills of California chasing toads through the woods to get high.

Albert Most, founder of the Church of the Toad of Light and a proponent of recreational use of Bufo alvarius poison, published a booklet titled Bufo alvarius: The Psychedelic Toad of the Sonoran Desert in 1983 which explained how to extract and smoke the secretions.

There have been deaths reported as the result of people attempting to get high from cane toad venom. Reportedly, some dogs in Australia, where the toads have become a major pest, have learned to lick the toads for pleasure.

Piss poor quality, but could not find the entire clip that includes "ingestion", which for me is crucial.

There is nothing wrong, repeat, nothing wrong, with major boobage.

Aint it great to be 13?
